Wine as an Investment or Collecting?

One of the wine topics I’ve been pondering is wine as an investment. I’m often asked about this, and now that I’m not currently studying for a major exam I will be spending time researching it.

On top of looking into investing, I’m looking into collecting wines to consume at a later date. For example, celebrating wedding anniversaries, a child’s birth years, etc.

There are many similarities between what type of wines are good investments and which are workth collecting. The big difference with collecting is that you are not concerned with the return on investment. If you like German Rieslings, you won’t have to worry about the future German wine market. Rather, your concern is holding on to a wine past its peak.

Some questions I want to be able to better answer:

  • What types of wines would someone purchase? There are some safe investments with Big name Bordeaux, Grand Cru Burgundy, Vintage Champagne and Vintage Port. Additionally, there is a growing market for Cult wines from all over, high-end Italians such as Super-Tuscan, Barolo and Brunello.
  • How long to hold onto the wine?
  • Are there certain winemakers I should look for?
  • How closely should I look at vintage? For collecting, are there certain vintages to avoid or look for? For collecting, if I’m looking for specific vintages are there regions to avoid or look for?
  • How do I sell my investment?
  • How do I best store my wines?
  • How do I best minimize risk of fraud?

Stay tuned for more information to come!
