- Label Cru Bourgeois will be used to replace Cru Bourgeois. The big difference is the new Label Cru Bourgeois will not be a classification, rather a mark of quality. They hope to bring back the Cru Bourgeois at some point, but with all the legal issues it’s not sure when that will be. The Label Cru Bourgeois will start with the 2007 vintage. It will be open to all Medoc wines and will be issued annually based on production and quality standards.
- Ratatouille wine is NOT going to happen. They have cancelled the project due to concerns of promoting under age drinking, which was discussed here a few weeks ago.
- Harvest for Champagne is set to start August 20. This early start is due to the high heat in April and yields are going to be low again.
- AVA approval suspended. The current rules have been around since 1986. And it sounds like the biggest reason for redrawing the AVA rules has to deal with the Calistoga sub-division in Napa.
- Harvest in Italy will be at least 15 days earlier than usual with a 5% lower yield. Southern Italy does not look like it will run early for harvest.
- Northern Rhone is creating an action plan. The main goal is to create a clear image in customers minds what Northern Rhone wines are and why they are worth the money.
- More detail on wine labels may by required in the US. Once again, they are considering adding nutritional information to all wine labels. This would include serving size, calories, carbohydrates, fat and protein. I don’t know about the rest of you, but when I see this information on a bottle of water, it always makes me laugh.
